Moving to Paris is hard enough without having to explain a herniated disc in a language you are still learning. Consultations here are held in English, French or Portuguese, whichever you are most comfortable with.

Arnaud Marguin trained at the Geneva School of Osteopathy and is registered with the General Osteopathic Council in the United Kingdom (registration 8938), alongside the Registre des Ostéopathes de France. If you have seen an osteopath in London, Dublin or Edinburgh, this is the same professional standard and the same regulator.

A few things that usually come up with patients arriving from abroad:

• No referral is needed. Osteopathy is directly accessible in France. You do not need a GP letter or a prescription to book.
• You do not need French social security to be treated. An invoice is issued after each session, which most private and expatriate health insurers accept.
• Bring any imaging you already have — MRI, CT or X-rays, with the radiologist's report, even in another language. Anatomy reads the same everywhere.
• The practice is multidisciplinary, sharing premises with general medicine, gynaecology, gastroenterology and dietetics, which makes a medical opinion straightforward to arrange when one is needed.

What is an osteopath in France?

A fair question if you have arrived from the UK, Ireland or the United States, where the title carries different meanings. In the United Kingdom, osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council and practise manual therapy. In the United States, aDO is a fully qualified physician. In France, osteopathy is a regulated manual practice, distinct from medicine, and directly accessible without a referral.
